The company was established by Frank McRae more than 50 years ago. McRaes Engineering Ltd is a New Zealand owned general engineering company, located in the heart of Whangarei's port and industrial area. Frank's retirement in the late 80's, saw Henk Eilering become the owner / manager.

Continued expansion over the ensuing years saw the purchase of DJ Engineering Ltd and relocation of the McRaes workshop to its current Hewlett Street site.

In early 2005 Christchurch businessman Humphry Rolleston took a financial interest in the company enabling the business to grow and purchase the Whangarei slipway site.

McRaes are a foundation distributor for Vickers Hydraulics in New Zealand. McRaes has had a long association with this international brand and the Oct 2007 acquisition of Hydraulic Industries Ltd, one of the oldest distributors for the "Aeroquip" brand of hydraulic hose & fittings in New Zealand, strengthened this relationship as both Vickers and Aeroquip are part of the Eaton Fluid Power group.

McRae's customer base extends from Northlands' major industrial sites, timber processing companies, ship building & repair facilities to local contractors and marine operators alongside several key national and international customers.

Both the marine and hydraulic divisions maintain a presence in the South Pacific with the supply, service and installation of hydraulic systems, fishing equipment, engines, bow thrusters and the specialised manufacture of ammonia refrigeration coils for Purse Seiners.

To compliment this McRaes has for many years manufactured a range of commercial fishing equipment, including Tuna Longline Reels and Line Setters.

With a combination of skilled personnel, mobility and the right equipment McRaes has become a significant force in Northland as a broad based engineering contractor specialising in:

  • Industrial plant maintenance and shutdowns,

Humphry Rolleston – Director, Shareholder
Humphry has been in business on his own account for over thirty years. He has considerable experience as a director of both public and private companies throughout New Zealand and Australia.

He is currently a director of four New Zealand public companies:- Sky Network Television Ltd, Property for Industry Ltd, Broadway Industries Ltd and Infratil Ltd. He is Chairman of Asset Management Limited, Craigpine Timber Ltd, Murray & Co Ltd and Fraser Macandrew Ryan Ltd in New Zealand and in Australia he is Chairman of Simmonds Lumber Pty Ltd and ANZCRO Pty Ltd.

Humphry, through Asset Management Limited, owns private businesses operating in New Zealand. He is a fellow of both the New Zealand Institute of Directors and The New Zealand Institute of Management.
 

Dennis Maconaghie – Chairman

Based in Whangarei Dennis is Chairman of McRaes. He has owned and operated numerous businesses across a range of sectors over 30 years. He has also managed large enterprises in both the private and public sectors. Dennis is Managing Director of Friendship Yachts, Chairman of the Whangarei Economic Development Group, Chairman of the Northland Marine Development Group and a judge of the Northland Business Excellence Awards. Dennis has a Masters Degree in Business Administration.
